Blending Heritage and Innovation for Sustainability
Spotlight on Artisans
Mongkol – A master weaver who draws charm from the world around him, reflecting playful perspectives and stories about life and his art. He weaves threads into fabrics that narrate tales of culture and time, crafting a style that resonates with tranquility, meticulousness, and reverence for traditional beauty, while ingeniously infusing a sense of modernity and distinction.
I consider myself lucky to be doing this. Although I couldn’t fulfill my dream of becoming a footballer, the journey taught me discipline and perseverance. I grew up in Ratchaburi and chose to study at Photharam Technical College because it was close to home. That decision led me to discover more about myself. Studying Textile Industry, specifically Thai-Vietnamese Jok weaving, opened my eyes to culture and history. I realized that weaving isn’t just about creating patterns; it’s about storytelling and preserving cultural heritage. I feel fortunate to do what I love and to connect stories through fabric.
I have worked in various textile industries, focusing on the technique of weaving fabrics, and became part of the Thai silk hand-weaving industry with leading companies in Lamphun and Chiang Mai. In 2000, I began working with my sister under the name "Mongkol Thai Silk," and in 2011, I met Boon (Torboon’s designer), and together we founded Torboon. With a shared passion for cultural work. At Torboon, I combine knowledge from large-scale industries with the traditional ways of local communities. I experiment on my loom to create cultural works that are practical in today’s changing world. This approach not only preserves the beauty of traditional craftsmanship but also presents new perspectives that seamlessly meet the needs of modern functionality and style.
In the future, I would like to explore working with textiles for other purposes. However, at present, I am focused on developing the production process to transform craftsmanship into industrial handicrafts. The goal is to make it reproducible with high standards and quality, so that the woven fabric can be used to make bags. This approach is driven by the idea of fostering sustainable development while preserving and continuing the legacy of traditional handwoven textiles.

Hand weaving is a skill that requires long-term practice and dedication. Every movement and use of thread must be done with precision and attention to detail to achieve beautiful and balanced patterns. Weaving combines creativity with technical expertise, as artisans often adapt traditional patterns while adding their personal touch. Hand weaving reflects a deep connection between the weaver and their tools and materials. Skilled weavers understand the subtlety of the fabric, the tension of the threads, and the rhythm of the weaving process, which demonstrates both respect for tradition and the ability to innovate based on traditional techniques.
